WEEKLY SUMMARY OF HONGKONG PRESS REPORTS AND COMMENTS

January 6 to 12, 1947.

Chief Internal Events Reported.

The "Hwa Shiang Pao" reported that very considerable prominence was given to the raising of funds in Canton to help the relatives of the deceased peanut hawker, and to endeavour to bring political pressure to bear on Hong Kong Government. On the same subject the Wah Kiu Yat Po reported that immediate payment of $10,000 promised by Hong Kong Govern- ment was asked. The 'Sing Tao Jih Pao" carried a report that the assault charge against Ramzan Syed, the police constable involved in the death of the peanut hawker, was adjourned to January 29. Commenting on the Shum...- chun border incident the same paper said that the incident was also being used as a mild political propaganda.

The "Sin To Daily News" said that the accident in which Mr. Luscombe, A.S.P., accidentally wounded a boy in the New Territories was magnified to a political incident, the general standard of reporting in the Chinese press approaching libel. The Office of Mr. T. W. Kwok had again been involved in an endeavour to discredit Government. The Canton paper, "Chien Kuo Jih Pao" reported that appeals had been made to Canton for help.

The "Chien Feng Jih Pao" reported that the C.E.A.C. and C.N.A.C. planes were grounded by Chinese Government for one week following a series of accidents.
